What is Pet Hospice?

In this episode of PDX Pet Connections Podcast, host Kim Hoshal talks with Jen to explore pet hospice and what the benefits are of adding a pet hospice provider to a pet’s health care team.

Unexpected Connections

Jen is back with PDX Connections Podcast host Kim Hoshal to share their unexpected, yet very special connection.

My Services

Caring for a senior pet can sometimes be overwhelming. As pets grow older, they may experience a range of health issues, including arthritis, decreased mobility, cognitive decline, and various chronic conditions that require specialized care. Adjusting to these changes can be a significant emotional and physical burden for both you and your beloved pet.

Establishing Care

Because my goal is to work in collaboration with the family veterinarian, I request medical records prior to the first appointment. At the initial consultation, the needs of both the pet and the family are discussed in depth, as well as baseline assessments of comfort and quality of life. Care Goals are created and a Visit Summary will be sent to the family veterinarian.

Sustaining Care

Goals will be revisited and adjusted as needed over time as health status changes. Support in medication organization, household changes and recommendations, mobility support, monitoring of physiologic status (Blood pressure, SPO2, EKG), sample collection and delivery to family veterinarian, and non-pharmacological pain management (PEMF therapy) are some of the services offered. Visit Summaries are sent to the family veterinarian after each appointment.

All But Euthanasia

As time progresses, continual assessment of pain, quality of life, and frailty are utilized to help families make educated decisions for their pet. Counseling families through making the end-of-life decision and helping choose the best setting for death is an essential part of the process. If a pet passes at home, transportation to the family veterinarian for after care is available.
